• When thinking about the application process, you should consider applying to 2 "SAFETY" schools (colleges you should have no problem being accepted to),
2 "REACH" schools (colleges that might be difficult to get into, but let's give it a try), and 4-8 colleges that are in your range given your grades, activities, and circumstances. While we don't discourage you from applying to as many colleges as you wish, we suggest 8 to 12 being the best number, especially when you consider the cost to apply to each.

• If you haven't taken either an SAT or an ACT, do it soon so you get at least two tests in with your application. After 2 tests your score probably won't change much, so truly consider whether you want to take a 3rd or 4th exam.

• There's a common misconception that some students will do significantly better on an SAT versus an ACT or vice versa. While that can happen, you will usually find that the two tests will usually fall within a band or two of each other for most students. • When writing your essays, try to give the reader a picture of who you are: What makes you tick? What interests you? What's important to you? What have you overcome to get here? And what makes you special enough to be a great asset to their university?
